First off before you want to watch this movie, make sure you are not trap in the perception of physical beauty for love. Second off, please do not compare Johnny Depp 'less-handsome-feature' in the movie to how you saw Angeline Jolie with Brad Pitt 'much-handsome-feature' in 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' (2005 film). All you have to do is understand the first letter Alexander Pearce sent to Elise Clifton-Ward at a cafe by a young handsome delivery boy who happened to be nobody (he smiled because he thought by giving his pen to a beautiful lady will brought him luck that the lady will fall for his generosity... the type of sleep over boy, d'oh!).

"... I'm a serious woman on the train, you tell me what my story is..."
— Elise Clifton-Ward
"Ok... hmm... I think you'd be a diplomatic attache or maybe a girl from this Germany whose father been kidnapped & they're blackmailing you into stealing something for them... "
— Frank Tupelo

Love is in the eyes of the beholders & circumstances they were in. Therefore 'The Tourist' takes plight by the critiques who didn't have a heart to understand the true concept of the whole story. This is a remarkable movie with mesmerizing action from start to end, much better than the original, 'Anthony Zimmer' (2005 French film).
The only reason Rotten Tomatoes thought it was slow muddled plot, or the lack of chemistry between Johnny Depp & Angelina Jolie was because their critiques were trap with the reality of Angelina Jolie's exotic beauty that is only match for a handsome character like Brad Pitt or Inspector John Acheson (played by Paul Bettany) or the missing sign in the movie... Rufus Sewell. I also find it absurd to read Roger Ebert's critique said the plot was absurd when I found the plot is rather tempting to watch, why? Because I have to say "love knows no boundaries." On second thought I agreed to what Daily Mail said about the movie—"a glossy, sophisticated, gloriously improbable romp — escapist fun for these austere times".

My favourite part of lines when they first met on the train:
Elise: Is there a man in my life...
Frank: i so ein see... (note: I believed he said that, means like "such I see")
Elise: Invite me to dinner, Frank.
Frank: What?
Elise: (point her eyes to the table)
Frank: Would you like to have dinner?
Elise: Women don't like question.
Frank: Join me for a dinner.
Elise: Too demanding.
Frank: Join me for a dinner?
Elise: Another question.
Frank: I'm having dinner... if you care to join me.

I MUST SAY."
OUTSMARTS
EVERYTHING...
I MUST SAY."
